The Night Tree

The Night Tree

At Wolfe’s Neck Center, the beginning of December means it’s time for the Night Tree event. We gather to read Eve Bunting’s book, make creations for the forest animals, and walk out to a bonfire to hang them on trees. This wonderful tradition was created by Judy Higbea, a beloved educator, WNC board member, and community member who passed away in 2015.

Even though we can’t come together this year, we understand this is a special event that families look forward to all year long. We know that Judy would have insisted we find a way to make it happen.

As with most things in 2020, the Night Tree event has gone virtual! Click here to watch a reading of the story, followed by a tutorial for making the craft, and a brief tour of some of the animals in our barn.

After you and your family watch the video, you can make pinecone bird feeders and strings of popcorn to hang in your own yard, or come out to the farm’s trails to hang them here. This is a great event to share with your friends and family near and far – choose a time to press ‘play’ on the video, then hop on Zoom to create the feeders together at the same time!

Supplies:

  • Animal feeder #1: Needle, string, plain popcorn, fresh cranberries
  • Animal feeder #2: Pinecones, vegetable shortening, bird seed

Did you make a feeder? We’d love to see it! Snap a picture and send it to lbensley@wolfesneck.org. You may see it on social media!

The Night Tree is an annual event that celebrates and gives thanks to our members for their ongoing support. Our members are the heart of Wolfe’s Neck Center. Your membership supports our work to connect people of all ages to food and farming.
