Say Goodbye to Winter Blues

Say Goodbye to Winter Blues

If you’re feeling the winter blues brought about by shorter days and colder weather, you’re not alone! For many New Englanders, the stretch between January and March can feel never-ending. At Wolfe’s Neck Center, we embrace every season, and encourage you to take advantage of this quieter time to learn or experience something new! Below are some of our suggestions to make this season one of growth and excitement.

For Those Who Want to Stay In

Whether you live next door to Wolfe’s Neck Center or halfway around the world, these family-friendly activities are perfect to complete from the comfort of your own home!

  • 10-Minute Farm Tour – Calves & Heifers: Join us virtually to meet some young calves and heifers! Educator Andrew shares fun facts about their housing style, what they eat, how we care for them, and more.

  • Fruit Dissection: This activity is great for upper elementary school students, younger learners with adult supervision, or for curious teens and adults. There’s even an activity sheet if you want to make this into a more in-depth lesson!

  • Family Movie Night: A great way to dive deeper into a topic or place that interests you is by watching environmental films – and there are so many resources out there! Check out some of our recommendations for your next movie night.

  • Grow Your Own Micro Mix: Eat well with a salad grown on your  window sill! Farmer Tom walks us through the simple process of growing spicy mustard greens, a delicious crop that yield results in just a couple weeks’ time.

For Those Who Want to Get Out

There’s no better remedy to beat the winter blues than to spend a few hours on the trails, with the animals, or looking out at the water. Wolfe’s Neck Center is open every day of the year from dawn until dusk, and is always free to explore and experience!

  • Take a Hike: Our hiking trails offer stunning views of the ocean, forests, and pastures. If there’s enough snow, bring snowshoes or nordic skis to traverse the property! Micro-spikes or good winter walking shoes are also recommended, depending on which terrain you are exploring.
  • Visit the Animals: Our Wishcamper Livestock Education Barn is the current home of some very cute calves, sheep, goats, and chickens, who love seeing visitors of all ages.
  • See the Cows in Action: Check out the dairy milking parlor from 3-4pm daily to see the whole process, from pre-feeding, tilling the pack, and milking. This behind-the-scenes peek is a great chance to get up close and see how our farmers care for our animals and learn some fun cow facts to take home with you!
